As the microfinance industry continues to shift its focus into understanding client’s needs and more effectively targeting specific segments, it is essential for management to understand an institution’s performance based on data. Many MFIs are collecting a substantial amount of information, but very few are analyzing the data or using it effectively to inform management decisions. Beyond strictly financial data, as social performance continues to become a priority in the sector, it is important for MFIs to use data to analyze their delivery on mission. This toolkit can help management make better decisions on lending methodologies, portfolio quality, credit policies, as well as in understanding the suitability of certain products and analyzing performance against the mission.

The Portfolio Analytics toolkit provides the theoretical background on data analysis and basic statistical concepts as well as a step-by-step process for preparing for and conducting a basic and detailed portfolio analysis. The tool helps management prepare portfolio performance reports and guides them through stress-testing scenarios. Finally, the tool presents a process to prioritize and implement the changes informed by the analysis. A detailed Excel tool and case study are also provided.

This toolkit is part of a 5-volume series of performance optimization toolkits on topics including equity valuation, financial risk management, capital structure optimization, cash management and portfolio analysis. This series was developed in response to demand from our network members to have practical tools that they could apply to their institutions. Corresponding trainings are being delivered to the network to ensure they have the financial tools to support the innovative solutions they are implementing to expand financial services to women and girls.
